Helped, Hugged, or Heard
“Do you want to be helped, hugged, or heard?”
I ask it when someone starts a rant. It tells me what kind of friend to be in that interaction.
Most people don’t answer, which usually means “heard”.
Nobody’s going to say “shut up, listen to me talk, just agree with me.”
Ranting is fine. 10/10 would recommend.
But it’s usually the same story, told the same way, for the fourth time. Not to get anywhere, but to hear it out loud again and have someone approve your point.
You usually can’t tell when you’ve sat in it too long. Your buddy can.
Somewhere around attempt three you get “dude. shut up and go do it.” That’s not him being a bad friend.
That’s the friendship working its magic.
But its also why AI conversations can feel like magic, for a different reason.
You can spin the same idea forty times and it’ll never get tired of you. No attempt three. No sigh. It isn’t smarter than your friend.
It’s just more patient than any person could stand to be.
The magic of AI isn’t “infinite intelligence”, it’s infinite patience.
A friend runs out of steam after the same conversation too many times.
AI just …doesn’t… Unless you run out of tokens.
So people bring it the story they already believe and call it thinking.
“But Preston, it pushes back on me.”
Until you rephrase it to agree with you.
You didn’t come for an answer.
You came to be heard.
